This silly songwriting hobby is bound to dry up soon...

... and when it does, I'm going to be calling upon my eldest son to pay the bills with his drum-master skills.

When we last documented Sam's playing, he was accompanying his Pop at Com Church family camp. He was about 5 weeks shy of 4 years old at the time. This video was taken a few weeks ago. Sam is now 4 years and 4 months (for those who need exact figures and such).

This video doesn't necessarily represent some huge improvement in actual playing, but I think it's significant because it shows you that he has this really instinctive thing happening. The musicians among you will notice that the boy just really looks like he belongs "on the throne" (that's a drummer joke, not a dumb joke about my last name or a hyper-ambitious claim about Sam's playing). He makes some mistakes (I mean, he's 4) and his finish is a little muddy. To be fair, he did this at my request, without any forethought or rehearsal.

Whatever. I'm a proud dad, even if I am still kind of weirdo, perfectionist musician. And you're just the lucky soul that gets to enjoy it.

Behold:

***This was my first time using blogger's stock video feature. Not sure I like the way it's set up. Anyway, if you prefer a little bit larger version, here it is on youtube.

You may call the ending "muddy", but a prog-rock drummer would call it "genius".

that was awesome! he may be 4 but the boy has skill!

Yes, yes, he has natural skill, but where did he learn to make those 80s-era-metal-drummer-rock-faces- at the camera, mmmm?

I love watching him play. Tell him his fanbase will soon outgrow his father's.

Seriously I'm amazed. We got Brody a drum set for Christmas and his usual comment when someone really plays it is, "STOP too loud."

Ah well, maybe almost four is the lucky age.

I am a prog rock drummer and it is genius. All he did was shift from 16th notes to eighth note triplets for a bit. He's still in time. That rules.

"his fanbase will soon outgrown his father's."
That may be the lowest goal anyone has ever set for my child. But thanks anyway.

Kevin--
thanks. I hate to give you the bad news, but "stop too loud" ain't a good sign of the boy's drumming future.

Johnny--
if there's anybody in the world who i want to impress with videos of my kid rocking the skins, it's you. So thanks.

My thought is that your family needs to come visit us so Brody can see a little dude on the drums! And some muscial direction would be nice too. I guess it's not enough to fill a 2 yr-old's room with instruments and hope he's just "a natural" :) You and Stace r the greatest teachers (musical and otherwise) Sam will ever have...you deserve to be very very proud!

You should still come visit...

Chrystal--
I think its funny that you act like there's a bunch of convincing and pleading associated with my family coming to visit you in Santa Barbara. Uh, let me be clear about this. We want to come LIVE with you there. You get me a couple of places to play (one can be your back yard or your half-bath or whatever) and we're there.

Listen, I'll book the Santa Barbara Bowl if you'd put something on the books! I am positive we can at least get you a couple of gigs in SB and surrounding towns.

Ross King Rocks the Central Coast!!!!! Woooo Hooooo! Let's make it happen.

The songwriting thing never dries up...you may want it to...but it won't. It's kind of like the weather; nothing you can do about it...might as well sit back and enjoy it.

Absolutely Awesome. And he smiles while he rocks!
